Getting Aboard the Lift truck
The 3-point dismount is amongst the keys to keeping operators safe. It is the main factor for maintaining operator safety, even though this is often ignored. For example, a few years ago, at a forklift rally, a participator carried out the course perfectly at a lift truck rally. At the end of his run, he was so thrilled, that he jumped off of his machinery and totally forgot to make a 3-point dismount. He didn't win the competition because he judges ended up docking marks from his overall score.
The importance of dismounting and mounting forklifts is a very serious thing to be covered in training. Moreover, having drivers wear their seatbelts could really save their lives in case of a tip-over. It is essential to know that if a loaded lift truck's center of gravity moves outside of the stability triangle then a tip-over situation can occur. Skilled operators rarely ever run into a tip-over situation, however, it is really important that they are prepared for that possibility in case it occurs.
Mount/Dismount
Mounting and dismounting of forklifts is important for ensuring the driver stays safe. This is also essential even on low platform pallet jacks. There are way too many injuries sustained from using these machines. Some of the serious situations consist of: Driver's catching their loose clothing or coveralls while dismounting and could end up falling and wrenching their back. At times, the driver could sprain or break an ankle when they step off of a forklift. The operator could accidentally break an arm while slipping and falling off of the pallet jack. The operator could suffer from torn shoulder muscles if they slip on floor debris when they are still hanging onto the handhold with one hand.
Having 3 points of contact is vital when dismounting or mounting a forklift in order to keep you safe. The 3 points could be obtained by 1 foot and 2 hands or by 2 feet and 1 hand. This stance is exactly like climbing up or down a ladder. Don't forget to face the machine at all times. Operators often have a tendency to hop or jump off the equipment or to face away from the machine and these mistakes greatly reduce the overall possibility of injury to themselves.
