Aerial Manlift Hazards
Aerial man lifts are personnel lifts such as boom lifts, articulated boom lifts and scissor lifts that use an articulated boom or a series of folding, linked supports. These machinery allows workers to get up high into previously inaccessible places. In certain ways, these types of equipment have made construction much safer and easier, however, the general safety that comes with the unparalleled mobility of aerial manlifts has applied a new list of dangers that can inadvertently result in severe injury or even death to unaware operators.
Falls
Falls from a man lift normally occurs when employees cannot secure the harness to the lift or fail to or are unable to wear a safety harness. Falls can happen when a worker on the platform acts unsuitably and partakes in an activity like for instance climbing the guard rails to gain added height. What's more, accidents can be caused if the ground-based operator causes the equipment to move in an unexpected motion prior to the employee being properly secured.
At times employees could fall when the base of the lift is struck inadvertently by a heavy object. In this situation, the force of the blow below becomes amplified by the lift's length, therefore causing the worker to be suddenly catapulted off of the platform. Clearly this dangerous action has terrible results.
Tip-Overs
Unfortunately, boom lifts are easily prone to tipping over. Tip-overs could happen in any kind of lift, but are more frequent in articulated boom lifts. As boom lifts can move both horizontally and vertically, they can change the equipment's overall center of gravity. Thus, if the lift is over loaded or parked on an incline of some kind, completely extending the boom when it is in the wrong position could result in a tip-over situation.
